What To Expect

While we encourage all of our students not to have "expectations", a typical Training Weekend may look like this:

9-10am: Meditation & Pranayama
10-11am: Philosophy, Reading, Discussion
11am-1pm: Asana Practice & Technique Breakdown/Discussion
1-2pm: Lunch Break
2-4pm: Anatomy/Physiology or Teaching Methodology
4-6pm: Asana Practice & Technique Breakdown/Discussion

Please arrive on time for training, or even early! Starting on time on the mornings and after lunch is important as there is a lot of material to cover and we will often be starting with meditation and centering. The studio will be open by 8:30am on Training mornings so you can arrive early and get settled.

The requirements for 200 Hour Certification with Canadian Yoga Alliance indicate that 165 of those hours must be contact hours (in the presence of the primary/secondary instructors). The other 35 hours may be completed outside of the classroom in the form of homework (reading + videos) or assignments. In between Training Weekends students will be required to complete various reading and assignments, either in preparation for the coming training or to expand on subjects already discussed. All hours and assignments must be completed to qualify for certification.

All students must also complete a minimum 10 Practicum Hours, in which you will practice teaching as the lead instructor of a class while in the presence of the Training Faculty. These hours will be completed near the end of the course, among public classes at the studio (ie: Community Classes, Karma Class, etc.) or in another setting in which you can receive appropriate feedback. We will work with you to provide opportunities to complete these hours according to your schedule and in a timely fashion, so you can receive your certificate shortly after the course concludes.

We encourage our students to attend 50 or more yoga classes during the course period. These could be classes at Kala Yoga, or anywhere else you like to practice! We will provide you with a log sheet for these classes, so you can keep track of your hours and have the class instructor sign off on your sheet. We also encourage you to keep a meditation/yoga journal for your own observations and notes. You may wish to record interesting transitions, observations, or cueing during a class you took, or perhaps thoughts and feelings that arose during your personal yoga or meditation practice. Keeping a journal is a great way to internalize a practice, and to get ideas down on paper quickly so you can return to your practice or meditation without distraction.
